The 250th Pass, most of Pern's surface is a desert, the weather patterns disrupted by the Red Stars sudden absence from its normal orbit. The rains scarce, very little green and fertile land left, even in the South, every human on Pern had to move from homes to one of the last few places that still held enough green land to support them. The dragons of Pern, the saviors, were growing rarer with the queens Clutches growing ever smaller as time progressed, and it was certain Thread was gone. The dragonriders were soon down to their single clutching queen and decided it would be best to move to a single Weyr, but with all the green dying and the Holders moving none of the originals would do for a suitable Weyr. Thus they followed the people, merging together as one group of colors flying through the air. After much debating on where to settle, the riders found a large beautiful lake and there above the water they made their home. The Weyr was built into the cliff side, as traditional Weyrs always were, though the Holds may be built with wood now some riders just wouldn't give up the old ways. Naming the Weyr Ateanic, after their golden Ateanicth, the riders settled there, the lake taking on the Weyr's new name to match. Soon the people were flocking around the Weyr, building Ateanic Hold to start a new life away from the desert that was Pern.
The riders did odd jobs for the Holds, hardly being needed at all they began growing their own crops to survive and not have to rely on the Hold for so much. The riders also explored the mass of Pern, hoping to find other small clusters of places full of green, more suitable places to live and expand. As time passed Ateanicth Rose less and less, until finally she Clutched her last and all felt the the time of the dragons was over. But behold! A golden egg gleamed on the Sands among the few of its siblings. When this queen hatched, she chose her rider even as her mother readied herself for her last jump between and the dragonet named herself Rhenith.
Fifty Turns pass under Rhenith, the Sands bare of any queen egg and once again the despair settled on those around that surely, this time, it was the end. Then Rhenith laid the largest Clutch seen in Turns, twenty-five eggs that she guarded jealously letting no one to see them even as Searchriders were sent of for the first time in Turns, the dragons old and hard to ride on. Finally, as the Touching neared, Rhenith allowed her rider to see the eggs for the first time and she was shocked at the largest egg, a bluish purple hue with Rhenith guarding it more so than the others. The other eggs were just as oddly colored!! When Touching came, it created mixed feelings, riders saying surely it was the end of the dragons, the odd eggs proof of it.
But lo and behold, Hatching day arrived, the candidates standing ready with bated breath. Only three of the candidates were female, since there was no gold egg and boys were preferred for the hard labor the greens had come to be expected of. But the dragons that hatched, were not the expected colors, no green, blue or brown found in their hues and the giant hatchlings broke their shells. Indeed the dragonets were huge, larger than any dragonet in the past, most would grow to dwarf their mother despite her being a queen! Many were dumbfounded as the hatchlings stumbled about, creeling for food and looking for Theirs. The Hatching ended without incident, though many a rider were dumbfounded staring at the new colors, two of the colors being the largest and perhaps the bossiest. Two Turns passed, and the two largest new colored dragons, Rose to mate within weeks of each other, each having a Clutch on the Sands. Snarling Clutching females are hardly fun to be around. The Touching and went, then the Hatching occured, spewing out the same new colors as before. It seemed the golds, bronzes, browns, blues and greens had been shoved out of the genetic code. The question was: Why?
Since that fateful Clutch of a hundred Turns passed, the odd colors have solidified their places, Tanzanites taking the place of Golds, Topaz taking over for the Bronze and Brown, Zircon the place of the Blues, Emeralds the place of Greens with an added Clutching ability, and Crystals taking the place of the legendary Whites, though they certainly hatch more often than the Whites. At the same time, it has been so long since the Red Star showed itself to the face of Pern that it has nearly been forgotten, just as the old colors have, slipping away into legend. But it seems as if white Ruth didn't take his rider far enough into the future to ensure that Thread would never fall again. In this New Pern, the new colors have wiped out the old replacing them thoroughly, one Last Weyr left standing to protect its three Holds, the last Holds on Pern. Will it be enough as the dragons ancient enemy approaches closer and closer without them knowing?
Ateanic holds three queens now, a Senior and her two Juniors. What will become of senior Telziath's Clutch as the junior Ryath approaches her Flight? Will there be a new queen? If there is a New Weyr may be in order, two many queens in one Weyr is never a good idea.
