Blackberries: imported by colonists, food.
Blueberries: imported by colonists, used to make the most popular bubbly pies.
Borage: imported, herb for cooking.
Buzzing Flies: like Terran flies.
Canines: dogs were also imported, though the dog of main choice is a Jack Russel Terrier type, who kill snakes that attack people who sleep in the open air. They are employed to kill tunnel snakes or turn spits.
Cherries: imported by colonists, food.
Chickens: these were the first imported Terran creature to be born on Pern. They have survived and flourished. They now only exist in the warmest Holds and in places where they are protected from wherries.
Citrus: equivalent of oranges.
Corn: imported by colonists, flourished and is food.
Corriander: imported, herb for cooking.
Dolphins: dolphins live in the waters of Pern, and though few still keep the craft, dolphineers are not unheard of to this day. They speak with and work with the dolphins of pern, and most are fishers. Dolphins are highly intelligent and the only other animal truly capable of talking telepathically to humans.
Ducks: one of the next creatures born on Pern after importing, they flourish on Pern. There are not many of these at present, they need the same conditions as chickens: warm and protected from wherries.
Felines: felines readily began breeding after importing, and most are tabby-cat types. They are used to kill off vermin.
Fellis: Fellis is a drink used to induce sleep, made from plant-life on Pern. It is used by healers to allow their patients to get rested and well.
Fingertails: small, carplike fish with a whippy tail, great food source.
Fireflies: like Terran fireflies.
Firelizards: these dragon-kin were discovered first by children out hunting for biological samples. It was then discovered that the hatchlings would, like Terran's ducklings, impress to the first being that fed them-firelizard or human. Many of the first colonists bonded to this hatchlings, then called 'dragonets'. They could fly almost from the moment they were born, and were self-sufficient after the first meal, hunting for themselves. A fair of these will begin humming when a hatching is imminent, and surround the eggs with seaweed and fill it with small fish and crawling creatures. As soon as the newborns break the shell, they are greeted with food and cries of joy. The first person to feed the hatchling impresses it. However, if a person is cruel to their firelizard, it may abandon the one it has impressed and return to the wild.
Flax: found by weavers, brought in by searchers.
Geese: these were imported but are now rarer, like the ducks.
Goats: with the exception of the cashmere, all goats imported to Pern survived and flourished.
Grain: wheat and grain were imported from Terran and did very well on Pern. It is used to make bread and other food, as well as for fodder for herding animals and runners.
Grass: the grass on Pern is blue-green and triangular in shape. The Terran animals had to be adapted to be able to process any of the native vegetation, especially herd animals who fed off of the grasses.
Grubs: these were created to render protected ground impassible to Thread. Twenty-five hundred turns after landing, the Southern continent has become unchecked jungle due to these grubs.
Hazel: imported, for skin.
Horses: strong but fairly small horses were bred after importing, blending Connemara and Welsh strains for riding. Shire horses were bred as draft animals for wagons. However, most of the true horses have died out, leaving 'runnerbeasts', which are an adaptation of horses.
Ladybugs: most were eaten by larger creatures and insects, very few survived to this day.
Leaves: the leaves on Pern are angular and sharp looking, many in the shape of arrowheads or dragon tails. Terran leaves were more round in outline by comparison.
Llamas: survived after importing and they are now beasts of burden, whose hair is used for spinning.
Lovage: imported, for coughs.
Marsh Lands: in the marshy areas of Pern, thick stemmed brushes the size and color of sage plants were found. The arrow-headed shaped leaves once rubbed on injuries provided relief from pain. Another of the plants proved to have narcotic uses in it's sap.
Millipedes and Segmented Worms: they scavenge in seaweed and on forest floors in the fallen leaves. They are harmless insects.
Mushrooms:imported by the colonists, they survived and are a food source.
Numbweed: a plant used to numb pain from bites, wounds and burns. Numbweed is the only source of painkiller known to the people of Pern, and without it things would be very rough going.
Nutmeg: imported, herb for cooking.
Onions: imported by colonists, food.
Oranges: imported by colonists, food.
Packtails: a tasty but dangerously barbed fish, resembling the Terran Monkfish. If the wound caused by one is not treated, it can become highly infected.
Parasites: there are many parasites on Pern, as well sa many types of insects. When the settlers came, they found both in abundance.
Pears: imported by colonists, food source.
Pern's Adapted Felines: Cheetah fetus' were experimented on by the creator of the grubs. The results were disastrous. They were meant to be metasynth-enhanced to kill off tunnel snakes and other dangerous creatures. Instead, his creations killed him, and escaped into the wild. None were seen until the sixth pass. They bred and flourished in the wild, and now run about in packs and will even attack a dragon.
Pigs:though they had to be genetically adapted for life on Pern after import, pigs are not bred in large numbers, so pork is considered a specialer type of meat.
Rainforests: they are very much like the ones on Terran. The greenery is thick, and the plants such as local bamboo grew and died very quickly, providing growth for the next generation of trees, creepers and grasses.
Raspberries: imported by colonists, food.
Redfruit: common to Pern, a tasty fruit with peach-like attributes.
Redwort: Redwort is a plant used as a disinfectant and cleansing agent. It is normally used to make sure a person's hands are clean before dealing with open wounds.
Rollers: a type of wood louse.
Rosemary: imported, for coughs.
Runnerbeasts: these are the Pern adaptation of horses. They are bigger and used for the same purposes.
Sandworms and Earthworms: These worms fulfill the same role as the Terran earthworms did. They burrow and tunnel in the dirt and break down things into fertilizer or more dirt.
Sheep: of various kinds, there are long and short fleeced sheep which thrived and flourished on Pern.
Shrubs: shrubs on Pern are very plentiful, there is no shortage of them in comparison to how many trees there first were.
Sisals: found by weavers, brought in by searchers.
Spiderclaws: these resemble crabs with many pairs of jointed legs. They are good to eat.
Spiders: spiders were imported from Terra, and flourished on eating the Pern parisitic bugs. They are now known as "gossamer spinners".
Springs: insects that hang in spiral loops until they find someone or something to cling to. They have an irritating, prickly bite that needs to be treated with antihistamine cream.
Sungazers: flowers of a little plant that grew mostly underground, showing just the bloom in the grass, like Terran's strawflower or windflower.
Terragon: imported, for coughs.
Terran fish: many types of fish and marine life were imported and thrived in Pern's waters with minimal adaptational changes.
Thyme: imported,herb for cooking.
Trees: when the first settlers arrived on Pern, they noticed that the oldest of the trees ranged from 220-400 turns. However, centuries later there are many older trees, because they've been protected from thread by dragons, and remain alive during passes. Trees are a source of food as they have redfruit and citrus growing on them. They are also important because furniture and things are made fromtheir wood, as well as paper. All of the Terran trees were imported to Pern, so there is everything from Pine, Oak and Ash, to Rowan and Willow.
Trundlebug: when the settlers came they brought bees with them as pollinators. However, the pollinator insects already on Pern warred with them, and won. The most prominent of the pollinators on Pern is the trundlebug. They were found to eat parasites and turn the soil, making them have the combined purpose of bees, earthworms and ladybugs. Trundlebugs were encouraged to flourish and to frequent the Terran crops. They were also found to have the most versatile camouflage of all the insects, ranging from blacks, browns, sand, blue-green and crystal-clear.
Tunnel Snakes: this is a well known creature on Pern, and everyone views them as pests. They are the most numerous pest, appearing in caves and rocky outcroppings. They have six limbs, and legs, and some have scales while others have tough skin. One type has long legs, but the rest have short, stubby limbs for creeping low against the ground. Many of them have sharp, powerful front claws for gripping and tearing. Usually they are 2-4 feet in length. The rear legs push tunnel snakes skinny bodies through the smallest openings in the rocks. The middle limbs serve as stabilizers in the land varieties and odd 'flippers' in the water dwellers. Most tunnel snakes have their hearing organs in their chests, close to the ground, but one variety of deeper tunnel snake has no less than six ear-spots, as it is nearly blind. The water-dwelling tunnel snake has a venomous bite which can be very dangerous if not treated promptly. The flesh of the victim can swell up painfully. All tunnel snakes swallow their prey whole by unhinging their jaws like Terran snakes. They can go for long periods without feeding, and it helps them survive during Threadfall. Some hibernate during colder seasons.
Vtols: VTOL stands for "Vertical Take-Off and Landing" and they were caught in large numbers around the first settlements. They have four wings and large eyes, rather like Terran dragonflies, but lack the long dragonfly body.
Whers: Wind Blossom Ping attempted to make more dragons after her grandmother, Kitti Ping's, death. However, she didn't have the genetic knowledge of her grandmother, and whers were the result of her tinkering. They look like ugly, malformed dragons, and their wings are stumpy pinions that look functional but are not. They are smooth skinned and colored like dragons, but this is really the only point of resemblance. When full grown, they weigh between 6-800lbs, and are about the size of a small horse. They only have two claws and a single pad, but despite that can move with surprising speed. Whers are impressible, like dragons and firelizards, and they adore their human mates with the same empathy and devotion as dragons do. They are very territorial, and if not properly introduced will kill anyone they believe is invading their home. They eyes have malformed lenses with countless little facets and therefore they can see heat rather than having normal eyesight. They are even able to see in total darkness. Their senses of smell are as keen as their night vision, and they are often used in mines to smell out bad gasses. They are not as intelligent as dragons, but they do serve a purpose. All wher names end in 'sk', just as dragon's names end in 'th'. The close a wher's name is to his or her human's, it is thought that the closer they will be. Normally, a wher is solitary and antisocial. If a female hatches eggs away from humans, their young return to the wild. They avoid encounters during the day, and will kill if disturbed at night. Only a few of the females eggs mature to hatch. One needs to 'blood' them for a bond to be formed, cutting their palm and letting them have a 'taste' of them. It is thought that if a person offers a lick of your own blood from slicing their palm to the clutchmother, they will have a better chance of her allowing them to take one of her eggs.
Willow: imported, for headaches.
Wine Grapes: imported by colonists, used as food and for liquor making.
