This is basically a helpful little guide for those of you who might wish to use it. From beginner to advanced role players, these are tips you could all stand to have a look at and use!
Proper Grammar and Spelling
- Quotes ( “ ” ) should be used whenever your character speaks vocally.
- Apostrophes ( ‘ ’ ) should only be used when inside quotes. (Ex. “‘This’ is the proper usage,” and ‘this’ is not.)
- Thoughts should be put in italics to signify they're thoughts.
- Thoughts or quotes in apostrophes are incorrect.
- Changing font colors does not affect your writing whatsoever. This is just for looks and doesn't act as apostrophes or anything else.
- Vocal words in quotes can be in bold if you so choose.
- Only book titles are underlined; nothing else should ever be underlined.
- To emphasize something you use italics.
- Strike-outs should only be used in OOC or for humor purposes.
- Alignment (centering, justifying, etc.) doesn't matter at all.
- Putting posts in block quotes doesn't matter, either.
- Paragraphs should be used correctly; don't use excessive returns! (Aka. Putting a return after ever single sentence is wrong.)
- Use paragraphs if needed; don't post something in a colossal word chunk.
- Never use two periods to end a sentence or trail a thought (Ex. “That's it..”)!
- Periods like so “...” can show afterthought or a soft ending to a sentence (Ex. “That was amazing... Incredible.”).
- “. . .” are an ellipses which means the words after should be substantial (Ex. “I went to my sister's house this weekend . . . she's crazy.”).
- “. . . .” show a drawn-out ending with no concluding thought thereafter. Think of it the same way as a period, but with a softer ending. They're usually used at the end of a paragraph.
- Hyphens (-) and dashes (—) are two completely different things; hyphens join things whereas dashes separate them. Two hyphens (--) can stand for a dash, but one hyphen, standing alone, does not. Spaces should not come after dashes (-- or —). (— is Alt 0151.)
- You're stands for "you are"; your shows possession of you. Its is the possessive form of it; it’s stands for "it is."
