It was thought that when strong-willed Lessa Impressed mighty Ramoth and Benden Weyr began to function fully under her reign that Pern had hope for the coming Pass. She was everything a weyrwoman ought to be, putting herself, a woman, into a position of power and bringing Benden out of the Holds' disfavor. However, her strong will did not save her from being lost between. With her desperate, foolish jump to the past, Lessa left Benden weyr forever, failing to bring forward the Oldtimers and leaving both F'lar and Benden to deal with the coming Pass alone. Thankfully, the weyrlings of Ramoth's last clutch have come back from the Southern Weyr, managing to fill Benden's wings. For now.
With Lessa's death, Kylara has become weyrwoman of Benden. Though selfish and vain, the proud woman has come to rule the weyr with an iron fist, shaping its dragonriders into a hardened militaristic force. With Kylara, there is no room for error and none dare speak out against her except F'lar.
Prideth, Kylara's queen, and Wirenth, Brekke's queen, are both laying two clutches a turn now, instead of one, but only Prideth's has yielded a golden egg this time. Both queens and riders are under heavy guard at all times, not even allowed to fly Falls any longer.
F'lar himself is a man without a cause. That's not to say he isn't the weyrleader. He is, and a good one at that, but beyond his duties, he is an empty shell, filling the void that Lessa left with alcohol. It isn't uncommon to find him in his weyr in a drunken stupor when he isn't carrying out his weyrleader duties.
The dragonriders of Benden are especially hard pressed to cover the skies over all the holds and often, they are forced to fly two Falls with barely a few hours of rest. Constantly fatigued, casualties among them are growing while F'lar sends out pleas for the Holds to send more candidates for the clutches on the sands.
As if Benden's troubles weren't enough, the Holds continue to be wary about the weyr's usefulness, and now that word has gotten out about Lessa's death, that confidence has reached an all time low. They have begun to send the worst of their goods for the tithes and there is talk in the weyr of sending out raiding parties again, which Kylara is secretly encouraging. It doesn't help that the Holds have taken on an attitude of being self sufficient with their advancing technology in flamethrowers.
However, they have their own troubles to deal with. A gang of Renegades has taken to raiding the Holds as well, convincing people to their cause as well as taking advantage of the general turmoil caused by the Pass. The Renegade leader, Jaeson, is a cunning and charismatic leader, and he has begun to work his way into Benden weyr.
For dragonriders and holders alike, day-to-day life has become a dark struggle against both Thread and fellow humans. With low morale, a barely functioning weyr, and 50 turns of Thread to look forward to, will the humans and dragons survive this Pass?
