  • Weyrfolk

Story:

Half a turn ago, great tragedy struck Sylvan Weyr.

Sylvan Weyr had always been isolated in the South, protecting a single Hold from Thread while contact to the Northern Continent grew thinner and thinner until it finally died down. Sylvan Weyr had been flourishing over decades, recovering from a Plague with ease, but when the Red Star showed up above the Starstones for the seventh time since the first settlers arrived, the worst happened.

Sylvan Weyr's Senior Gold went between when her rider died from an infection, leaving the Weyr without a Queen, without any dragon that could clutch. With Threadfall nearing the prospering Weyr suddenly faced extinction. Their Queen had always been healthy, still young enough to clutch one or two golden daughters... but now she was gone. Wiped from Pern by a simple infection her rider had caught. Sylvan Weyr seemed doomed. In their despair, Sylvan riders sought for help in their Archive, discovering a number of old documents that told them about the Northern Continent where other Weyrs--not just one--should be. One of them would surely help them out! They wouldn't let a Weyr die! The hold needed their protection, the Weyr had to be strong to face fifty Turns of Thread! A party was formed under the Brownrider R'len, a trustworthy man who would be diplomatic enough to explain their situation carefully. They used old maps they had found to start their journey adragonback. Without coordinates they could not go between directly but had to fly the whole way up north...

With the hope of their whole Weyr resting on their shoulders, a small group of dragonriders left Sylvan Weyr, seeking help up North, hoping that a Queen would come and settle down in the much warmer Southern climate.

Two months passed.

R'len had promised to return before the first Thread fell above Sylvan Weyr, promised to return no matter how far they had come, but when the silvery rain begun to fall, the Sylvan riders had to face it without the small group of riders, without R'len. Without hope. Sylvan Weyr was destined for doom. In the midst of the Fall, their old Weyrleader, G'ram, died from a heart attack, sending both him and his bronze between to never come back again. The Weyr was in shock, losing not one but both leaders so shortly after another. A'der, G'ram's second, barely managed to keep the wings from breaking apart during the rest of his fall, distracted by yet another odd occurrence.
A dragon had appeared out of nowhere. A red dragon. A female dragon, judging by how her slender wings were cutting through the sky, carrying her seemingly effortlessly towards the line of Thread. Red, yes, but going by her size, A'der had hoped for a split second that she was a Queen - sent from the Northern Weyrs to save Sylvan, hence her red hide! But the Crimson was not a Queen. She had chewed firestone and A'der's hopes went up in flames like the Thread in front of her. He felt hollow. Lost. He could not weaken the Weyr yet again by sending another group North.
The Weyrleader was dead, and R'len probably was too.

Sylvan Weyr was without a Queen. Without a Leader. Without hope.

Two Sevendays after her arrival, the Crimson rose to the first flight of her young life, growing heavy with eggs after being caught by a brown. Nobody knew what these eggs would bring to Sylvan, nobody could be sure that the Crimson was truly their savior... the new Hatchlings - if the eggs were even alive - could as well end life as it had been known by Sylvan's inhabitants once and for all. Frankly, A'der had not stepped down for the Brownrider who won the Crimson, neither had Theresa been chosen as new Weyrwoman, the question of leadership still open...

Thirteen dragons hatched.

For the first time in over a Turn, dragons hatched on the Sands of Sylvan Weyr. But the thirteen that survived were frowned upon. They were Crimson Dafnierth's offspring, sporting three new colors the Weyr had never seen before and a second Crimson that never lived to impress. The Weyr is in turmoil, the peace held by A'der in danger... ...will the new colors be allowed to stay? Will they even rise and clutch themselves? Can they be a useful asset to Sylvan Weyr's small wings? So many questions... so few answers... The first Turn of the 7th Pass is nearing its end and with a Gather at the end of it, the Council will meet again, the Rulers of Pern possibly deciding about the future of the new colors. A'der's weak defence stands between them and a Lord that never quite liked the dragonriders...

Callie: Creche Head| Journeywoman Healer: Female

Basics:
Status: Pending
Name: Callie
Name Pronunciation: Cal-ee
Gender: Female
Age: 18 Turns old
Rank: Creche Head| Journeywoman Healer
Location: Dragon Canyon Weyr

Appearance: To start off, Callie is a beautiful girl. She has naturally curly blond hair that flows over her shoulders and almond-shaped blue eyes that entice just about everyone; it tugs at your heart strings. Her baby face, and full lips, just add to her look, making her darn near irresistible to those of the human population that are all bent up on what they can see of a person.

When it comes to height, she's sometimes described as a tree, or a growing dragon. She stands at a good 5'11", which means she's most often times looking down at 90% of the female population, and eye-to-eye with next to all of the men. This makes her fairly intimidating... Though her womanish figure is nothing to fear!

Callie has a gentle touch; her skin being porcelain in appearance, matching well with the white's she often wears. So, most of what she wears could easily be dirtied, but the young lady isn't often gallivanting about. She knows poise and grace, though at times it may really seem as if she has none. She likes to wear stylish dresses that come either just above or just below the knee. She has an array of clothing to choose from.

She finds her curls difficult to deal with a lot of the time, making her wish her hair was straight! Not to mention she wishes she had larger eyes, describing her own as "squinty."

Personality: Callie is known for being very helpful; even when she’s not asked to lend a hand she oftentimes will. She gets very involved in her work, so much so that she abuses sleeping, eating, and spending time with her friends. She is a perfectionist with many things, but mostly with her healing duties and her appearance. She’s often too harsh on herself, and other people correct her because of it. She does good work, and receives some of the highest praises from her fellow healer's. Despite, she grumbles about how she’s undeserving.

She tends to stay away from guys regardless of her desire to find herself a nice Weyrmate. The one thing about Callie is that she is very sarcastic, and loves to tease people and play pranks. A lot of the time this turns guys off, whether or not she is this way intentionally is unknown. She is more this way with guys than she is with girls, so it’s certainly a possibility. Her remarks are hurtful, and do not always come with an apology, making her seem heartless at first. The sooner people catch on that she’s a joker, the better off they are.

Callie has her serious moments, even so, and is a great listener. Her advice comes from the heart. She puts herself in other people’s shoes and desires nothing more than to see everyone around her happy, (funny when at times she’s the one causing their sorrows, well again, not purposefully).

Callie knows she’s a pretty girl, but isn’t the type to ever use their looks to their advantage. She has this idea that everything has to be earned over time; she enjoys working hard for the things she gets. It’s said that she works far too hard.

Likes: Healing, the heat, swimming, fixing herself up all pretty-like, socializing, milk, being out in the rain, heights, listening to the harpers play, making jokes, and teasing others.

Dislikes: When people lie (dishonesty), overly flirtatious people, people who fail to see what’s on the inside and rather focus on the outside, male partsy people, being alone, stereotypes on girls, missing sunset’s, and being inside all day.

Fears: Not being able to find ‘true love,’ losing all her friends, and becoming a boring workaholic.

Quirks/Habits: Teasing people, putting her finger to her lips, and putting her hand on her hip.

History:
Birth season: Mid Spring
Relatives:
Mother- Calirah (deceased)
Father- Lieam
Brother- Calam

Background: As a young child everything was perfect in Callie's life. Her father was a happy Beastcrafter, and her mother, his wife, was a happy Weaver. As most stories go, happiness isn't forever, and Callie felt most oftentimes that she'd learned that lesson a bit too suddenly... She and her brother were not in the least bit prepared for that day, but nevertheless, there was no stopping it.

A wild runnerbeast had been brought into her family's ranch one day when she was off practicing her craft with the Master healer. Needless to say, her brother dropped on by to where she was at, calling her away quick! Wondering what was going on, completely frantic; she went back to her family's ranch (where she commuted back and forth to each day.) Once having gotten back to her family's ranch with Calam, what she saw rendered her completely immobile. No matter how Calam shook her, and soothed her, she just stood there, frozen. Her mother was on the ground, blood pooling out around her body, her father covered in the red liquid. Her mother was dead.

Calirah had decided to be the first to try and break the stallion, and instead had been tossed off, and repeatedly trampled, crushing every bone in her body.

Ever since that day, no member of her family had ever been the same, and Callie (only fourteen turns at the time) decided that her obligation was furthermore to her father's ranch. She helped to muck out the stalls, look after the trained horses, and keep the house as clean as she could for her father and brother. Her father discouraged this, and urged her to go back to what she loved most, a life she'd prosper from greatly. Her brother too urged her to back to healing, knowing that it’s what made her happy. He could not bear to see her sister mourning each and every day over their mother, for she was not going to come back, and the both of them simply had to move on...

It took a few months, but it was the Apprentice Beastcrafter boy that her father had taken-in to work with, Kedar, that helped her to make her final decision to go back to practicing the healing craft. He was a childhood friend of hers, one that she respected dearly. She took his word as law a lot of the time, truly believing that the boy had wisdom beyond his years.

When Callie was sixteen turns of age, someone brought a couple of flitt eggs to the ranch. Her father, wanting to cheer up Callie, gave her both of the eggs. Feeling incredibly selfish, and knowing how Kedar sometimes spoke-of impressing a great dragon, decided to give him one of the eggs. The boy joked of how she'd get a green, and he a bronze, and then the two would have a magnificent clutch. Callie would just roll her eyes playfully, and shrug off his words, hoping that wasn't the case. She was well aware of what wonky feelings mating flights gave a person.
When the pair of eggs hatched, Kedar's, to his surprise, revealed a female green. He named her Scroll. And Callie's, to her utmost surprise, revealed a beautiful brown. She named him Stigma, because of the heart-shaped mark underneath his chin.

It was at the age of seventeen that she walked the tables, and by this time Kedar was also soon-to-receive his title as Journeyman Beastcrafter.

Spending a year there, the both of them, perfecting their craft, news of an abandoned Weyr came to there ears. After conversing for a few days about it, both the boy and girl decided to pick-up and go. Callie hated to leave her family, but something about getting a fresh start appealed to her far too much. So, therefore, she left. Her father had consented both of them to go, thinking it a good idea. He commented that they'd need a few youngsters to help run the place, ones who actually knew what they were doing! Callie had laughed at that, and Kedar had regarded it as true.

Now, the pair are on their way to a brand-new life... What kind-of life, they know not!

Fire-lizards:
Name: Stigma
Colour: Brown
Description: Stigma is the most helpful creature in the world as far as his bonded is concerned. Anything out of her reach, he grabs in seconds. Anything she's forgotten as to where she put it, he finds. Callie often jokes that he walked the tables soon after her, and now serves as her assistant. They correspond well, shared images being quite handy.

The brown flitt is a lighter color, almost seeming to shimmer a bronzish-hue in Rukbat's rays. He is a medium-sized brown, not a noticeably small creature, while not being noticeably large either. He is lean, for there isn't a moment when he's not on the go. Worked hard, he benefits from it. This goes to say he has a hardy appetite!

The flitt has a heart-shaped mark underneath his chin, making him easy to identify from the other brown flitt's. The mark is a darker shade of brown. He's a peacemaker flitt, chattering away in complaint when anyone decides to argue in his presence.

Craft:
Craft: Healercraft
Rank: Journeywoman

Speciality: Callie is good at working with her hands, i.e. stitching, splints, bandaging, ect. She is quick at doing said procedures, seeing as she has the most experience with minor wounds. More people are likely to trip and fall than they are to crack their head off of something and be oozing out their innards.

Weaknesses: Callie has your typical nervousness during a life-threatening procedure. When she knows that there are chances of losing a patient she is unable to be as neat and tidy under the pressure. Nevertheless, her freak-outs are only a mental thing; on the outside she is calm, cool, and composed.

Dragon Application:
Preferred Names: Tefrith

Secondary Color: Green
Do not want!: Bronze (xD)
Aware of responsibilities for chosen color?: Yes.
Able to take on responsibilities for said color?: Yes.

Basics:
Status: Accepted
Name: Xion
Name Pronunciation: Zeer-ee-on
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Rank: ???
Location: Dragon Canyon Weyr
Appearance: Xion is rather short considering everyone in his family was taller in stature. He stands at 5'5", and many of the girls he knows are taller than he is. This has always bothered him a fair amount, for being short is something that irks him. His hair is black, and he keeps it a bit longer, and kind of mussed up. His eyes are a stormy grey-blue, reminding one of the skies overhead before a storm. He's weight-height proportionate, and though he looks okay, he's only slightly toned, nothing that notable, though.

He likes to wear white and black together, with an odd black choker around his neck that he keeps on except when doing his work. He also wears a matching bracelet, they really just look like black bands, and he never mentions them. He likes black boots, hates brown ones, so he only wears black on his feet. He dresses rather nicely at all times, and therefore he looks well-kept enough.

He most attractive feature is really his eyes, since he's shorter not many girls bothered with him when he was younger, and even shorter! His hair tangles a lot when he sleeps at night because he moves around so much, so getting it neat in mornings is a bane of his, though he won't cut it shorter than it is.
Personality: Xion likes to pretend that he has no cares in the world, that no matter what anyone says or does, it doesn't phase him. In reality, not much does. He's very laid back and kind of has that 'dark mysterious' character about him, since he's always so cool and calm and collected. Good luck getting on his bad side, because nothing really bothers him so you won't be able to. He'll just ignore you, or give you mono-syllable answers. He doesn't really talk much, and everything he says is rather short and to the point. He doesn't like anybody but he doesn't really not like anybody, either. It's as if he couldn't care one way or the other. He has a sense of humor, but not many get it. It's a dry and sarcastic sort, and he rarely ever jokes or laughs.

He seems to be wise, even if he doesn't show it, and in truth he is rather intelligent. He rarely ever applies himself to his full extent, but he doesn't ever complain about anything. He does what he's asked, no more, no less, and no one really knows if he'd be better as a leader or a follower, since he's never really had to do much of either. He likes watching people, and even though it doesn't show he absolutely loves dragons and firelizards. He won't tell anyone that, though, because no one will hear it from him unless they were to directly ask. He never has a problem answering a question, no matter how personal, because he doesn't see the point in not answering it, rather than that he's an open person. He's actually rather secretive and because of his short answers, even though he'll answer a question you're not really finding out much unless you're really, really prying. In which case, he might or might not just ignore you because he thinks you're being nosy.

He doesn't really have a hobby. He likes everything rather equally, and his one weakness is for animals, though no chance he'll let anyone no that, either! He's a complex character, but not really a bad guy. He won't go out o his way to help someone, but he won't turn them down if they ask for it, either. He tends to mind his own business, and prefers it that way. His pet peeve is loud, nosy people, who don't know how to mind their own business, and people who bully others. Xyrion isn't a fighter, though he isn't a wimp by any means he hates fighting, hates drama. He prefers decent, down to earth people who get along with everyone, like he does.

History:
Birth season: Mid-Summer
Relatives: N/A
Background: Xion was fostered in the Weyr, and never met his real parents. The truth of it was that his mother didn't want a child since his father was a brownrider who ended up leaving for another Weyr, and she was an apprentice Beastcrafter apprentice who was way too young to be raising a child anyhow. She was only 15 when she bore Xion, and she gave him to a close friend who worked as a drudge in the Weyr to foster. However, she'd left that friend the same choker and bracelet that Xyrion never takes off, to give to him with a letter when he turned fifteen himself. It explained that she didn't think herself capable of raising him as well as he deserved, but that she loved him and wanted the best for him.

Xion never knew his father was a brownrider, nor would it have mattered to him because his father left his mother and had never wanted anything to do with his son. Xion had and has a lot of buried emotions about things, which he never talked or talks about. He simply lived his life as best he could, and found that he liked his time alone. When he got the note from her on his sixteenth turning day from his mother, he figured that it was too late to be bothered really worrying about his past anymore.

Due to not really being a social person, Xion ended up taking on the job of hunting and gathering food for the Weyr. It wasn't really a craft, but it meant he got to spend lots of time out of doors, and meant that he didn't have to be social if he didn't feel like it. It was when he was out on a hunting trip that the plague struck. Usually he'd be gone a few days, bringing back his catches, ready for the butchers to work with. He also dealt with skins for furs, such as smaller animals and the occasional wild feline.

Xion wasn't as devastated as some when the plague hit. His foster mother and he were never close, as soon as he was old enough he was considered one of the Weyrbrats--a child of the Weyr, not of a single person. He had no real friends or family, therefore. The only real family he had had given him up, and perhaps for the first time he was grateful for this.
